[OTHELLO] DESDEMONA

from WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE & TONI MORRISON

SANDERS THEATER | Cambridge, MA | 2019

[OTHELLO] DESDEMONA is a new, devised work combining Shakespeare's Othello with Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison's play Desdemona, and original music by queer pop artist Be Steadwell (Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center). Morrison's response to Othello is an intimate dialogue of words and music between Desdemona and her African nurse Barbary, performed by Steadwell herself, giving voice and depth to the female characters of the play. In setting these texts and their legacies side by side, [OTHELLO] DESDEMONA transports one of the most pivotal and disturbing treatments of race in Western culture into the 21st century.
