THE TWO-CHARACTER PLAY
from TENNESSEE WILLIAMS
THE BUNKER THEATRE | London, UK | 2018
This surreal reimagining of Tennessee Williams' rarely-performed masterpiece THE TWO-CHARACTER PLAY weaves together influences from contemporary dance, cinema, and classic American dramatic-realism. Two actors on tour―brother and sister Felice and Clare―find themselves deserted by the troupe in a decrepit “state theatre in an unknown state.” Faced (perhaps) by an audience expecting a performance, they enact “The Two-Character Play." Clare wonders if the play has ended, and how they would know if it had. It is unclear to which play she is referring. She observes that the “audience” has left, which of course it has not. As the lines between performance and reality become increasingly unclear, the real audience is left unsure if they are participants, spectators, both, or neither.
